Why did I gag but not throw up?
The experience of gagging without throwing up is called dry heaving, or retching. It’s often described as a feeling that you need to throw up but cannot. Fortunately, retching is usually temporary and most people find success stopping it using at-home remedies or over-the-counter treatments.
Can gag reflex make you vomit?
Along with violent muscle spasms in your throat, gagging is often accompanied by abdominal muscle spasms and a feeling of nausea. According to a 2014 review, gagging reactions can range from mild choking to violent retching and vomiting.
7. Use Your Hand
Perhaps the best trick for people with small mouths and sensitive gag reflexes is to get your hand involved. Your hand can do a ton of the work, and can free your mouth up to focus on the more sensitive head. Plus, your hand can provide a contrasting type of sensation. You can use more pressure than you can with your mouth. Wrap your hand around the base of his penis and slowly stroke up and down while you try some of the aforementioned techniques on the head. Let some saliva drip out of your mouth to give your hand plenty of lubrication.
Unlearning the Gag Reflex (Desensitisation)
- Relax and breathe through your nose if physically possible.
- Using a small, very soft toothbrush, brush your tongue to right where the area that triggers your gag reflex begins (if you gag, you’ve gone too far). Spend about 15 seconds brushing that area, and then call it a night.
- Repeat the process over the next few days, at least once a day, in the exact same spot. Stop just short of the area where the gag reflex kicks in.
- When you are comfortable with this, move the brush slightly further back. Repeat the process as you did in the first spot.
- Continue moving the brush farther back. Each time you move the toothbrush back, your gag reflex has been desensitised in the previous spot. Keep moving it farther and farther back over the course of several weeks.
- Be persistent. The whole process may take a week to a month to complete.
I have an upper denture and was not able to put it in my mouth because it made me gag. I couldn’t even tolerate it for 10 seconds. So I googled gag reflex issues, and discovered a really logical approach which I used with great success. The article I read said to brush your tongue sideways, back as far as you could without having a major gag and do so twice a day for 15 seconds. I did that for one full week, before trying to put the denture in again. It worked like a charm. – from our message board
Tip: do something relaxing while you’re practising, for example watching TV.
The same exercise can be used to desensitise your gag reflex in the palate area. Follow the same steps as above, but instead of brushing your tongue, gently massage your palate just behind your upper front teeth for a few minutes. When you are comfortable with this, move the brush slightly further backwards over your palate and carry on massaging. Practice this exercise until you’re comfortable massaging the front half of your palate.
Desensitisation exercise for swallowing or anything involving water
I teach my patients to practice swallowing with their mouths open in the run-up to the next appointment. Try this yourself at home. Once you have done this for a few days, you can progress to holding a small amount of water in your mouth (and keeping it there), while allowing the swallowing reflex to take place. Obviously the trick is not to swallow any of the water – just to allow the natural reflex within the throat to take place, keeping the water in the mouth. Acupressure to Resolve Gagging
How does acupressure work to temporarily halt involuntary throat contraction or gagging? This technique is very similar to acupuncture except that anyone can do it.
While acupuncture requires a licensed therapist and employs needles to stimulate pressure points on the body, acupressure uses gentle to firm finger pressure alone. This makes it ideal for self-treatment where and when necessary.
This method is scientifically backed too. In 2008, the Journal of the American Dental Association published a study that found that pressure applied to a specific point on the palm of the hand consistently altered the severity of the gag reflex. (4)
These techniques are helpful for other situations as well such as to relieve pain and enhance relaxation. I’ve used acupuncture to induce labor and acupressure to prevent seasickness when on a cruise. I’ve used the same technique to prevent carsickness and airsickness in my children when necessary too.

Other Ways to Help with Gag Reflex
While using acupressure is helpful to use in the short term, over the long haul you probably will want to take steps to desensitize yourself to gagging.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by using your toothbrush. (5)
- Start the process by brushing your tongue every time your clean your teeth.
- Brush for about 15 seconds on a spot as far back on the tongue as you can tolerate without gagging.
- Repeat every day until you no longer feel an urge to gag coming on at all.
- Move the toothbrush slightly further back on the tongue and brush on that spot for about 15 seconds, again repeating every day until there is desensitization.
- Continue moving the brush further back in the mouth until you are able to brush the entire visible length of the tongue without discomfort. The entire process could take several weeks to accomplish.
How to Stop Gagging?
One of the most frequent emails I receive is from parents who have trouble giving their children supplements such as cod liver oil. Some children gag quite severely when taking any supplement even in liquid form off the spoon. It can leave a big mess on the floor over and over again.
