- Make a holiday-themed show. Find a story on the Internet about something relevant to the holiday, and make the characters out of paper, write down what each character will say and do, and memorize it. Get a friend or family-member if necessary.
- A good idea is to make a monster story for Halloween, Santa or Reindeer story for Christmas, and Bunny/Egg/Chicken story for Easter.

Tip 1 On Making Shadow Puppets
Before you begin to create your puppets, why not select a favorite book or write a story to act out? That will give you an idea as to what types of puppets you need, and what you need them to be able to do!

Shadow Puppet Theater

This is my daughter, soon to be 10 years old, posing with her newly created shadow puppets and puppet theater. This craft was so easy to make! We started with a cereal box, rescued from the recycling pile.

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!
In the photo above, the children are rehearsing their play. The sheet is stretched between two large wooden pegboard structures that we had in the room. At the moment, the sheet is not really pulled taunt enough.
As they rehearsed, one of the homeschool moms teaching them stood on the other side of the sheet from the kids, watching their rehearsal and offering tips, such as "Remember to make your puppets lightly touch the sheet, or they won't be visible to the audience!"
Cut Shadow Puppets with a Machine
If you have a silhouette cutting machine (Silhouette Portrait or Cricut), you can import the designs and have them cut in no time. Below, you will find my detailed tutorials on how to do that.

Pros: The machine does a good job, and once you invest in it, you can use it for all the silhouettes you will ever need. I’m very fond of mine.
Cons: Not so cheap. On the other hand, for a crafter, it’s a really amazing investment, and cost is similar to a decent printer. Like a printer, there is the ongoing cost of expendables – you need to buy replacement mats and blades occasionally.

How to make shadow puppets with paper. First, get the printable shadow puppets templates (they’re free!). Print them onto cardstock paper and cut them out with scissors. If you cut out the eyes, the shadows come out even better. Tape the skewers to the back of the puppets. This will make it easier to play with them in the light.

Make your own shadow puppets – Planet Science

Light travels as a wave. When you put your shadow puppet in between the lamp and the wall, the puppet blocks some of the light waves. The closer you put your shadow puppet to the lamp, the more light waves are blocked. This makes a bigger shadow. Moving the shadow puppet away from the lamp makes a smaller shadow as fewer light waves are blocked.
