The Secret Ingredient in Hairspray: Alcohol
Various types of ink have ingredients with chemical properties that are fairly unique. Most inks contain a mixture of pigments, dyes, solvents, and lubricants that in combination make them very difficult to remove. Inks can be based on oil solvents or water solvents, and most everyone has experienced the difficult problem of removing stains from oil-based inks.
Permanent and ballpoint pen ink are oil-based inks, and their stains can sometimes be removed by using rubbing alcohol applied with a cotton swab or cotton ball. Hairspray used to contain alcohol, which was the secret ingredient that allowed it to get out ink stains.
However, over the years, manufacturers have decreased the amount or completely removed the alcohol from hairspray because it can dry out or damage hair. Even in the best of circumstances, hairspray or rubbing alcohol really works best if the stain is fresh. A long-dried ink stain is unlikely to come out easily, no matter what type of cleaner you try to use on it.
Water-based inks are another matter. A combination of alcohol and ordinary soap and water laundering often removes them entirely, so there's no need to rummage through your bathroom cabinets to find the hairspray for that one.How to Remove Correction Fluid Stains From Fabric and Carpet

You may find this method has been around for years and proven effective for stain removal on fabric.

6 Flame Thrower
Obviously, this tip should be used only by an adult or with adult supervision and with caution. If you find yourself in need of a flamethrower, use hairspray! Hairspray is flammable, so proceed with caution. Hold a lighter in front of the nozzle and flick it. Then shoot a steady stream of hairspray into the flame, pointing away from yourself and any objects nearby.
2 Art Sealant
This is one of my favorite ways to use hairspray. I love art and drawing, but I often that my pencil, charcoal or crayon drawings can easily become smeared. Spraying a light coating of hairspray over my finished pieces prevents this from happening and preserves the life of my drawings! Try it next time you or your children bust out the pens and pencils.
Commonly Asked Questions
Does it make a difference what color the ink is or what kind of ink gets on the skin?
-It doesn’t make any difference what color the ink is. The methods and stain-lifters are the same.
The only difference in the method of stain removal is whether the ink is water-based – in which case it should come off quickly with just soap and water (see Step#1 Wash Skin With Soap And Water in the Step By Step Instructions For How To Remove Ink Stains From Skin section) or if the ink is oil-based – in which it may come off with soap and water (Step#1) but may need a tougher stain-lifter like one of the choices in Steps #2-8 in the Step By Step Instructions For How To Remove Ink Stains From Skin section.
Is ink on the skin unhealthy and can it give you ink poisoning?
-It’s possible to get ink poisoning from getting ink on your skin, but highly unlikely as you would need to get a massive amount of ink on your skin or to swallow a large amount of ink.
An accidental ink mark isn’t dangerous although drawing on your skin isn’t a good idea unless you’re using markers that are safe to use on the skin.
If you write on your skin purposefully and get ink in an open cut, you could get an infection, which isn’t recommended.
